Sri Lanka ranks third globally for traffic congestion

International data reports revealed that Sri Lanka placed third in the rankings of countries with the most severe traffic congestion and road blockage in the world.

According to the Traffic Index by Country 2026 Mid-Year released by the prominent Numbeo institution, which collects data on living conditions and consumer indices globally, Sri Lanka reached the third position.

According to this latest ranking, Sri Lanka placed third in the entire world by recording a high index value of 254.5 points, and only two countries, Nigeria and Costa Rica, stand ahead of Sri Lanka.

The Serbia-based Numbeo online database compiled this report by directly utilising information actually experienced by ordinary citizens and commuters travelling around the world.

Accordingly, the report mentions that the 10 countries with the worst traffic congestion in the world are:
