India declares day of mourning to honour former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Khalifa Al Thani

A national day of mourning is observed across India today (13) as a mark of respect for the late Emir and founder of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced yesterday (12) that the national flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings where it is regularly hoisted throughout India.

Furthermore, no official entertainment or official ceremonies will take place on this day.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Sheikh Hamad as a visionary leader who steered Qatar towards immense development and prosperity.

Prime Minister Modi noted on social media that he considers it an honour to have met him during his last visit to Qatar in February 2024, adding that India will always remember him as a true friend.
