Schoolgirl dies in three-wheeler crash

A 13-year-old schoolgirl receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Kandy Teaching Hospital died today (30) from severe injuries sustained when a three-wheeler travelling from Nallathanniya to Maskeliya veered off the road near the Mohini Falls area on July 22, according to Nallathanniya Police.

The deceased was identified as Selvam Dishna, an eighth-grade student at St. Joseph's College, Maskeliya, residing at Lower Division, Murray Estate, Nallathanniya.

Members of the same family were travelling inside the three-wheeler when the incident occurred.

The driver and a relative seated in the rear died at the scene, while two schoolgirls and a schoolboy sustained serious injuries and received treatment at the Kandy Teaching Hospital, Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital, and Dickoya Base Hospital.

The schoolboy treated at Dickoya Base Hospital has since left the hospital, police stated.

Nallathanniya Police Station is conducting further investigations into the incident.
