WFP warns of rising hunger due to El Niño impacts

Nearly 49 million more people in the most vulnerable countries could face severe food insecurity by the end of next year due to the strong El Niño weather phenomenon affecting numerous countries, the World Food Programme warns.

Foreign reports indicate that as a result, drought in Southern Africa, delayed monsoon rains in several areas of Asia, and erratic rainfall in other regions are most likely to occur.

According to World Food Programme estimates, the total population facing food insecurity could reach around 274 million.
