New Chinese envoy calls for all-sector support to strengthen bilateral ties

The new Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Wei Huaxiang, arrived in Sri Lanka today.

On arrival, expressing his deep gratitude and pleasure on his appointment, he said that being in Sri Lanka, "fills me with warmth and inspires in me a deep sense of longing and admiration."

The new envoy expressed that a traditional friendship that continues to grow stronger over time is enjoyed by China and Sri Lanka, rooted in ancient history. Over 70 years ago, the signing of the Rubber-Rice Pact stood as a testament to mutual support and solidarity in times of adversity.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and across various fields has yielded fruitful results that benefited millions of people.

Broad and promising prospects are faced by the China-Sri Lanka friendship, building on the strategic guidance provided during the 2025 visits to China by President Dissanayake and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

China always takes Sri Lanka as a priority in its neighbourhood diplomacy as both nations work toward economic development and national revitalisation.

Next year, the two countries will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Rubber-Rice Pact.

The Ambassador pledged to dedicate all efforts to carry forward this traditional friendship, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese institutions and citizens.

"In this endeavour, my work cannot be accomplished without the support and assistance of friends from all sectors in both China and Sri Lanka. I look forward to more frequent contact, closer communication, and deeper friendship with all of you, and I welcome your views and suggestions," the new envoy added.
