The Republic of Lithuania and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka will commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, marking three decades of friendship, mutual respect, constructive engagement and growing cooperation between the two nations.
Formal diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Sri Lanka were established on August 20, 1996.
The important anniversary provides an opportunity not only to reflect on the progress achieved over the past three decades, but also to look ahead towards a new chapter of cooperation in diplomacy, tourism, education, trade, investment, digital innovation, sustainable development, culture and people-to-people engagement.
In a special message issued to mark the anniversary, Diana MickeviÄŤienÄ—, Ambassador of Lithuania to Sri Lanka, extended her heartfelt congratulations and warmest wishes to the people and Government of Sri Lanka.
“Over the past three decades, our countries have built a strong and friendly relationship based on mutual respect, trust and constructive cooperation. As we celebrate this important milestone, we also look ahead with optimism to further strengthening our partnership,” the Ambassador said.
The Ambassador also highlighted several notable similarities between Lithuania and Sri Lanka, including their comparable land area and the resemblance in the colours of their national flags.
The Ambassador emphasised Lithuania’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Sri Lanka in areas including digital innovation, information and communication technologies, FinTech, cybersecurity, sustainable tourism, education, trade and investment.
The Ambassador also expressed strong appreciation for the work carried out by the Honorary Consulate of Lithuania in Colombo, noting its contribution to strengthening people-to-people relations and promoting cooperation in tourism, academic and educational exchanges and business.
R. M. Manivannan, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Lithuania to Sri Lanka, described the occasion as an important moment to reflect on three decades of friendship, mutual respect and steadily growing cooperation between the two nations.
The Honorary Consul noted that since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations on August 20, 1996, Lithuania and Sri Lanka have built a meaningful partnership based on shared values, constructive dialogue and a commitment to peace, democracy and sustainable development.
He further highlighted the strong potential for future cooperation, bringing together Lithuania’s achievements in digital technologies, FinTech, cybersecurity, life sciences and laser technologies with Sri Lanka’s strategic location, cultural richness and economic potential.
“Lithuania and Sri Lanka have many opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, tourism, education, innovation, sustainability and people-to-people exchanges,” Manivannan said.
“The Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania and the Honorary Consulate remain committed to strengthening collaboration between our governments, institutions, businesses, universities and communities,” he stated.
