Five individuals died in several fatal road mishaps that occurred in various areas across the island yesterday (22), Police Media Division says.
A pedestrian walking on the road died in a mishap that occurred in the Katuneriya area on the Marawila–Wennappuwa road within the Marawila police division, and police state that the identity of the deceased is not yet confirmed.
The mishap occurred when a lorry travelling towards Wennappuwa collided with this pedestrian who was walking on the roadside.
The pedestrian who sustained serious injuries in the mishap died after being admitted to the Marawila Hospital.
The driver of the lorry involved in the mishap was arrested, and Marawila Police are conducting further investigations.
Meanwhile, a 67-year-old resident of the Pahala Yagoda area died in a mishap that occurred in the Pahala Yagoda area on the Yagoda Trackmo Junction road within the Ganemulla police division.
The mishap occurred when a motorcycle travelling towards Trackmo Junction, unable to control its speed, collided with this pedestrian who was crossing the road.
The pedestrian who sustained serious injuries in the mishap died after being admitted to the Ragama Hospital, and the motorcyclist involved in the mishap was arrested.
An 18-year-old resident of the Palai area died in a fatal motorcycle mishap that occurred near the 271st kilometre post on the Jaffna–Kilinochchi road within the Palai police division.
This mishap occurred when a motorcycle travelling towards Kilinochchi collided with another motorcycle that was crossing the road.
One motorcyclist who sustained serious injuries in the mishap was admitted to the Palai Hospital and transferred to the Kilinochchi Hospital for further treatment, where he died.
The rider of the other motorcycle involved in the mishap was arrested, and Palai Police are conducting further investigations.
Meanwhile, a 75-year-old resident of the Ottamavadi area died in a mishap that occurred in the Kusalana Gama area on the 500 Acre Kalawewa road within the Ipalogama police division.
This mishap occurred when a motorcycle travelling towards Kalawewa collided with the rear of another motorcycle travelling in the same direction, causing both motorcycles to overturn.
The two motorcyclists and two pillion riders who sustained serious injuries in the mishap were admitted to the Kalawewa Hospital and transferred to the Dambulla Hospital for further treatment, where one pillion rider died.
Ipalogama Police are conducting further investigations regarding this.
Ragama Police stated that an eight-year-old girl died and two others were hospitalized with serious injuries following a road mishap near the Walpola railway station on the Ragama–Walpola road yesterday (22) morning.
