A stock of illegally imported Beedi leaves along with two dinghy vessels and a lorry were seized during a special joint search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy and Police in the Vellaveedhiya beach area in Negombo today (23) morning, the Navy states.
The Sri Lanka Naval Ship Kelani of the Western Naval Command carried out this operation in coordination with the Negombo Thelwatta Police.
Two suspicious dinghy vessels and a lorry present at the beach area were subjected to inspection, uncovering a stock of over 2,276 kilograms of bidi leaves brought illegally via the dinghies and prepared for transport in the lorry.
The stock of Beedi leaves, two dinghy vessels, and lorry seized during the operation were handed over to the Negombo Thelwatta Police Station for further legal proceedings, the Navy states.
