Sajith accuses government of neglecting farmers

The current government is giving stepmotherly treatment to the people engaged in farming, and the children, youth, and mothers in the country today are facing severe pressure and distress, while the rights of farmers, fishermen, and workers have been snatched away by this government, states Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The Opposition Leader made these remarks while addressing a Samagi Jana Balawegaya membership drive public meeting held in the Elawaka area of the Medawachchiya constituency in the Anuradhapura district.

Although many promises were presented to the people back then claiming priority would be given to agriculture, this government has now forgotten all the promises made to the entire populace, and despite promising to reduce the electricity bill by 33%, provide fuel at the port landing price, offer a Vitz car for Rs. 1.2 million, and provide a motorcycle at a low price, none of those promises have been fulfilled today, noted the Opposition Leader.

Furthermore, 30% to 40% of the country is poor at present, and jobs are being lost as factories are closing down today and being established in foreign countries, he stated.

The Opposition Leader said that the country has reached a state where it receives no foreign direct investments, leaving 22 million people helpless as a result.

Even though the human-elephant conflict in the country is widespread at present, not even the government that boasts walking libraries can control it or provide solutions, the Opposition Leader further mentioned.
