IIHS introduces international foundation programme as alternative to A/Ls

The IIHS International Foundation Programme has been introduced as a progressive alternative to the traditional Advanced Level (A/L) pathway, offering students a more holistic and future focused route to higher education and professional success.

For decades, A/L education has been the main route to university entry in Sri Lanka. However, it often requires students to spend two or more years in highly exam-oriented study, frequently accompanied by heavy financial investment in tuition classes and intense academic pressure.

Recognising these challenges, IIHS has developed the International Foundation Programme to provide students with a more balanced academic and professional preparation pathway. The programme not only prepares students for higher education but also supports their intellectual development, emotional resilience and career clarity.

Designed to mirror university style learning, the Foundation Programme trains students in independent study skills, academic research methods, presentation techniques and project-based assessments. A strong emphasis is also placed on English language development, with focused training in IELTS reading, writing, listening and speaking to ensure students are both university ready and globally competitive.

Beyond academics, the programme places importance on personality development and professional readiness. Students develop confidence, communication skills, critical thinking ability, emotional intelligence and self-discipline – qualities considered essential for higher education and modern workplaces.

A key strength of the IIHS International Foundation Programme is its early and continuous career guidance component. Within the first six months, students receive structured mentoring to help identify their strengths and interests while exploring professional pathways such as engineering, health sciences, information technology, business and management and education.

The programme also integrates industry orientation sessions and one to one mentoring with professionals, enabling students to gain practical exposure before entering university.

By the completion of the Foundation Programme, students are academically prepared, IELTS ready and career focused, with the ability to pursue both local and international higher education pathways.
