Scotland’s World Cup hopes remain alive despite a 1–0 defeat to Morocco, with Steve Clarke’s side undone by a lightning-fast start in a bruising Group C encounter.
The Scots conceded after just 70 seconds at the Boston Stadium, as Ismael Saibari punished hesitant defending to fire the Africa Cup of Nations champions into an early lead. The goal came amid a reshuffled Scotland line-up, with Kieran Tierney deployed on the left of midfield in a tactical move aimed at limiting the influence of Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi.
However, the plan unravelled almost immediately as Grant Hanley and Jack Hendry failed to deal with a simple ball in behind, allowing Saibari to burst through and finish emphatically. The early blow stunned the travelling Tartan Army, who had arrived full of optimism.
Morocco, ranked among the world’s elite after drawing with Brazil last week, controlled large spells of the game without ever fully overwhelming Scotland. Clarke’s side gradually settled, and John McGinn came closest before half-time, slicing a promising back-post chance wide.
After the break, Scotland showed more intent. McGinn again threatened as he went down under pressure in the box, but appeals for a penalty were waved away by referee Ilgiz Tantashev. Angus Gunn then kept Scotland alive with a sharp save to deny Bilal El Khannouss, while Grant Hendry produced a crucial last-ditch block.
There were further frustrations when Scott McTominay saw a deflected effort drift agonisingly into the side netting, before substitute Lyndon Dykes headed wide as Scotland pushed for an equaliser.
Despite a sluggish start, Clarke’s team finished strongly, turning early despair into late encouragement. The result leaves Scotland’s qualification hopes intact, with their fate still in their own hands heading into a decisive final Group C match against Brazil on Wednesday.
