South Africa stun South Korea to reach knockouts

South Africa reached the World Cup knockout phase for the first time in history after a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey.

The historical breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute following a scoreless first half. Thapelo Maseko collected a pass from Thapelo Moremi inside the penalty box, shifted the ball to his left foot, and slotted a precise strike through the legs of Jens Castrop into the near post to establish the 1-0 scoreline.

Three points moved the spirited African side up to second place in Group A behind Mexico. The achievement guarantees them a spot in the last 32, setting up a knockout clash against Canada in Los Angeles. Prior to this tournament, South Africa failed to progress past the group stage in every World Cup appearance since hosting the event in 2010.

South Korea dominated possession but lacked clinical quality in the final third, rarely threatening the well-drilled South African defence. Even the halftime introduction of forward Son Heung-min failed to spark an equaliser, with the veteran attacker tightly marked and restricted to just a single touch inside the opposition penalty area.

The defeat leaves South Korea third in the standings on the brink of elimination, relying on other tournament results to determine if they qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. Meanwhile, South Africa manager Hugo Broos delays his planned retirement at the end of the tournament to extend his stay in the dugout for the knockout rounds.
