Rumesh Tharanga awarded Commonwealth Gold medal

Rumesh Tharanga was presented with his gold medal for the javelin throw event moments ago at the 23rd Commonwealth Games. He secured the gold medal by achieving a distance of 89.75 metres. This victory marks Sri Lanka's first gold medal at a Commonwealth Games in two decades.

The javelin final took place in the early hours of today according to Sri Lankan time, drawing intense attention as several strong contenders, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra from India, had qualified for the final. Rumesh stood out because he is currently ranked as the number two athlete in the world and has brought glory to the nation in all recent international competitions.

Carrying the gold medal hopes of over 22 million Sri Lankans, Rumesh experienced an unsuccessful first attempt. Momentarily shaking the hearts of the nation, Rumesh relit the lamp of hope on his second attempt by hurling his javelin to a distance of 89.75 metres. This served as a promising sign that the twenty-year drought of Commonwealth gold medals for Sri Lankans was coming to an end.

Throughout the event, formidable athletes including Indian Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra attempted to surpass Rumesh on several occasions, but no opportunity was given to them.

Consequently, Rumesh Tharanga brought pride to the motherland of Sri Lanka as the national anthem was played with dignity at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow for the first time in 20 years.

The gold medal won by Rumesh is the fifth gold medal won by Sri Lanka in Commonwealth Games history. Previous gold medals were secured by boxing champion Barney Henricus in 1938, Duncan White in the 440 yards hurdles in 1950, and Pushpamali Ramanayake and Malini Wickramasinghe in the pairs air rifle shooting in 1998. Chinthana Vithanage previously won a Commonwealth gold medal for Sri Lanka in weightlifting in 2006.

Accordingly, Rumesh's gold medal enters history as the first Commonwealth gold medal won by Sri Lanka in field event.
