Excavations at a mass grave site within the Colombo Port have so far unearthed the remains of at least eighty-eight individuals.
The discovery was made in July 2024 during construction for a new elevated expressway, with work being overseen by Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Disanayake and senior professor of archaeology, Raj Somadeva.
The Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harshana Nanayakkara, stated that Sri Lanka has documented seventeen mass grave sites to date.
