An open verdict was delivered regarding the death of former Test cricketer Jayananda Warnaweera, with the Judicial Medical Officer of the Kandy National Hospital ordering that the body parts be submitted to the Government Analyst.
The post-mortem examination was conducted the day before yesterday (October 17) at the Kandy National Hospital, after which the remains were handed over to Warnaweera’s wife.
Police stated that the final rites for Jayananda Warnaweera were performed today (October 18) at 3:00 PM in Mahaiyawa, Kandy.
He passed away at the age of 64 at his residence in the Ranawana area of Katugastota.
An alumnus of Mahinḋa College, Galle, he earned his Test cap in 1986, playing his debut match against Pakistan.
He played in 10 Test matches and 6 One-Day International (ODI) matches.
After retiring from his cricket career, he served for a period as the curator of the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
