A 78-year-old mother of two died on the spot after being attacked by a swarm of hornets while plucking tea leaves last afternoon (12), according to the Nanu Oya Police.
The deceased was a resident of the Kirimetiya Estate in Nanu Oya.
The incident occurred when a hawk reportedly struck a hornet's nest located on a large tree nearby.
The disturbed hornets then attacked the workers in the adjacent tea plantation.
While other female workers managed to flee the area and escape the attack, the elderly victim was unable to get away.
Police stated that her body has been placed at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
