Pelmadulla PS opposition members protest gas price hike

Opposition members of the Pelmadulla Pradeshiya Sabha entered the council chamber today (07) carrying firewood bundles, gas cylinders, and protest signs to voice their dissent against the government's decision to sharply increase gas prices.

The councillors highlighted that raising gas prices ahead of the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year season would trigger a price hike in numerous other essential goods and services. They emphasised that this move places a severe economic and mental burden on ordinary citizens preparing for the festive season.

By carrying empty gas cylinders and firewood into the chamber, the members signalled that the price hike had forced the public back to using traditional hearths. They strongly accused the government of ignoring public distress and imposing an additional economic burden during the New Year period.

The protest, which included the display of placards and the chanting of slogans, led to a heated situation within the council as members criticised the administration's "mindless decisions" that hinder the public's ability to celebrate the festival.
