The final rites for the Assistant Director of the Ministry of Finance, who died under suspicious circumstances whilst under suspension, took place this afternoon at the Pahala Weerambuwa public cemetery in Kuliyapitiya.
Ranga Nishantha, an Assistant Director of the Department of External Resources who faced suspension over an incident involving the transfer of US$ 2.5 million from the Treasury to a third party, was found dead in his garden on the 30th.
Preliminary investigations suggested the cause of death was suicide, as several cut wounds were visible on the body.
A medical board comprising four specialist judicial medical officers from Kurunegala, Kuliyapitiya, Nikaweratiya, and Anuradhapura performed the post-mortem examination yesterday following a directive from the Ministry of Health.
The specialist board concluded that the official died due to excessive bleeding caused by multiple cut wounds from a sharp weapon, according to Acting Police Media Spokesperson Superintendent of Police Minura Senarath.
The specialist judicial medical board further noted that the injuries appeared to be self-inflicted, the Acting Police Media Spokesperson stated.
The body of the deceased Ranga Nishantha returned to his residence today following the completion of the post-mortem.
