Fifty-five new hostel projects will be implemented to develop residential facilities for sixteen thousand students in state universities across the island.
The Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education announced that this massive hostel project series will roll out under three phases.
The announcement issued by the Ministry of Education noted that 'Model A' type hostels accommodating four hundred students and 'Model B' type hostels accommodating two hundred students are planned for construction.
Accordingly, Sabaragamuwa University receives seven projects accommodating two thousand two hundred students, and the calling of tender bids for one of these hostels took place on 20 May 2026.
Rajarata University receives seven projects for two thousand two hundred students, and bids for selecting constructors for one hostel successfully opened on 21 May 2026.
South Eastern University receives six projects for two thousand students, and tender bids for one hostel opened on 21 May 2026, with further steps currently underway.
Uva Wellassa University receives six projects for one thousand eight hundred students, where preliminary discussions with construction companies took place and the calling of bids occurred on 22 May 2026.
Eastern University receives five projects accommodating one thousand six hundred students, and bids for one hostel opened on 30 April 2026, with evaluations currently underway to select the most suitable institution.
University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Wayamba University and University of Vavuniya receive four projects each, accommodating one thousand two hundred students per university, and the preparation of tender documents, legal paperwork, and technical evaluation reports is currently underway.
University of Ruhuna receives four projects for eight hundred students, and the preparation of the ground by starting practical work at the site of one hostel is notably seventy-five percent complete.
University of Jaffna receives two projects accommodating six hundred students, and the evaluation of proposals is carried out by the university.
University of Moratuwa receives two 'Model B' type projects for four hundred students, and the calling of bids for one hostel commenced by 17 May 2026.
Trincomalee Campus receives two projects for four hundred students, and the calling of bids on a design and build basis concluded within the period from 09 April to 27 May 2026.
Gampaha Wickramarachchi University receives two projects for four hundred students, and the selection of land is currently underway.
