Police were called to rescue a dog that had been left in a car parked at Fosse Park Shopping Centre in Leicestershire.
Officers were at the centre, in Enderby, over the animal's welfare on Tuesday at about 12:45 BST, and the force said the dog was removed from the vehicle.
It added the dog's owner was identified and the pet was returned.
Leicestershire Police said: "A number of inquiries are being carried out."
It comes amid a second day, in parts of England and Wales, under a rare red warning for heat - with an amber warning in place for other areas.
Last night, the UK endured its warmest June night on record.
The RSPCA recommends anyone seeing a dog inside a vehicle showing signs of heat stroke to call 999.
