Daisy Edgar-Jones enters the Jane Austen cinematic universe in the first trailer for Focus Features’ new adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility.”
The “Twisters” star plays Elinor Dashwood, one of three sisters who are forced to leave their family estate with their widowed mother and move to a humble cottage. There, they experience love and heartbreak for the first time.
Based on the teaser, it looks like director Georgia Oakley has helmed a faithful take of Austen’s debut novel, complete with plenty of sweeping shots and longing glances. Alongside Edgar-Jones, the cast includes Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Margaret Dashwood, George MacKay as Edward Ferrars and Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Jennings.
Oakley’s debut feature film, “Blue Jean,” earned her nominations for a BAFTA Film Award and a British Independent Film Award. “Sense and Sensibility” is being produced by Working Title Films, the studio behind rom-com classics like “Love Actually” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary” as well as other Austen adaptations like 2005’s “Pride & Prejudice” with Keira Knightley and 2020’s “Emma” starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
“Sense and Sensibility” has graced screens before, most notably in a 1995 Oscar-winning adaptation from Ang Lee that starred Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, right before she set sail on the Titanic. Thompson wrote the script and picked up her second Academy Award for its screenplay.
Focus Features will release “Sense and Sensibility” in the U.S. on Oct. 16. Watch the trailer below.
