Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz will not join the Kandy Royals for the 2026 Lanka Premier League (LPL) despite his selection by the franchise.
Gurbaz thanked the Kandy Royals in a social media statement for trusting him and selecting him to represent the franchise in the tournament.
He stated, however, that commitments in Afghanistan’s domestic T20 competition, the Shpageeza Cricket League, make him unavailable.
"Unfortunately, due to my commitments with Afghanistan’s domestic tournament, the Shpageeza Cricket League, I will not be able to join the Kandy Royals squad this season," Gurbaz noted.
The Afghanistan international added that he notified the franchise well in advance, giving them sufficient time to find a suitable replacement and complete necessary preparations.
Gurbaz also extended his wishes for a successful tournament to the Kandy Royals and the Lanka Premier League.
His withdrawal leaves the Kandy Royals searching for a replacement ahead of the 2026 LPL season opener.
