England edge Mexico in five-goal classic to reach quarterfinals

England secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, booking a place in the World Cup quarter-finals against Norway. The match, delayed by an hour due to severe storms, saw England overcome a hostile atmosphere and a second-half red card to emerge triumphant in one of their most impressive recent displays.

Jude Bellingham proved instrumental, scoring twice in 98 seconds to put England in control before half-time. While Julian Quinones pulled a goal back for the hosts just before the break, England remained composed.

The challenge intensified after 54 minutes when Jarell Quansah received a red card for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo. Despite the numerical disadvantage, England regained their two-goal lead when Harry Kane converted a penalty after Anthony Gordon fell in the area.

Mexico refused to surrender, and after Kane fouled Brian Gutierrez in the box, Raul Jimenez scored from the spot to narrow the deficit to 3-2. Manager Thomas Tuchel responded by bringing on defenders Dan Burn and Djed Spence, switching to a five-man defensive line to endure 11 minutes of stoppage time and secure the win.

England’s success relied heavily on a mature game plan at an altitude of over 7,000 feet, designed to absorb the intense pressure from a crowd of 80,824 spectators.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford delivered a standout performance, making crucial saves to deny Jimenez. This marked Pickford’s 17th World Cup appearance, equalling the England men’s record previously held by Peter Shilton.

Bellingham stood out not only for his goals but for his defensive contributions, including a vital late-tackle on Cesar Montes to prevent an equaliser just before half-time. This victory represents a significant milestone for Tuchel’s side, who navigated one of the most demanding atmospheres in football to continue their tournament journey.
