Government to auction 254 luxury vehicles and end MP pensions

The government has decided to auction 254 ultra-luxury, low-fuel-consumption vehicles currently held by the Ministry, Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala stated.

These vehicles, previously used by former MPs and ministers, have incurred high maintenance costs. The auction will proceed after obtaining Cabinet approval and a valuation from the government valuer.

Additionally, the issuance of duty-free vehicle permits to parliamentarians has been suspended. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has yet to seek Cabinet approval for this measure before the new parliamentary session.

The government has also resolved to abolish the pension system granted to MPs after five years of service. A committee has been appointed to review the decision, Minister Wijepala confirmed.
