Mahinda Rajapaksa files petition seeking restoration of security

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court, requesting an order to reinstate his withdrawn security detail.

The petition names Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and several cabinet members as respondents. Filed through his legal team, Rajapaksa claims that his security force was reduced to only 60 officers without a proper security assessment, leaving him without armed protection and solely dependent on police officers for security.

Rajapaksa argues that his life remains under threat due to his role in ending a nearly three-decade-long war, citing ongoing terrorist threats. He contends that the withdrawal of his security violates his fundamental human rights.

The petition calls for the court to declare the respondents' actions as unlawful and to order a threat assessment. Additionally, the former president seeks the restoration of his full security detail.
