Sri Lanka’s Cabinet has reportedly approved a report based on repeated requests from local farmers to increase import taxes on certain vegetables.
According to internal sources, the decision is based on a report submitted by the Food Security Committee, which considered the impact of imported potatoes, red onions, and big onions, on domestic agriculture.
Farmers have long urged the government to impose higher duties on these goods, citing difficulties competing with low-cost imports.
Further reports suggest that if tariffs will go into effect, it could be officially announced as early as tomorrow (26).
Currently, a duty of Rs 20 per kilogram is levied on imported potatoes, Rs 50 per kilogram on red onions, and Rs 10 per kilogram on big onions.
