Transport authority takes action against 33 bus conductors for ticket fraud

The Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority (WPRPTA) has taken legal action against 33 bus conductors over a two-day period for failing to issue tickets to passengers.

Gamini Jayasinghe, Chairman of the WPRPTA, confirmed that the enforcement was carried out on Wednesday (1) and Thursday (2).

On Wednesday, authorities inspected 347 buses and identified 22 where tickets were not issued.

Yesterday, they inspected 118 buses and identified 11 such cases.

Jayasinghe noted a positive shift in behaviour: "Previously, about fifty per cent of non-issuance of tickets was reported. The situation is now reaching a satisfactory level. We believe that in about two weeks, we will be able to bring this figure down to a very minimal percentage."

The licenses of the conductors who failed to issue tickets are being taken into the custody of the Road Passenger Transport Authority. They will face a fine and be required to attend a one-day training session.

Furthermore, Jayasinghe announced a stricter penalty starting this month: any conductor who fails to issue a ticket will have their licence suspended for three days.
