The adverse weather currently affecting the island has brought exceptionally heavy rainfall, with Passara in the Badulla District recording the highest precipitation over the past 24 hours at 137.8 millimetres.
The Department of Meteorology reported other significant rainfall figures, including 134 millimetres in Pelgahathenna, also in Badulla, and 108.2 millimetres in Dambadeniya in the Kurunegala District.
The Department explained that the current rainy conditions are being caused by the influence of two low-pressure systems (cyclones)—one in the Arabian Sea and another to the east of Sri Lanka, near the Northern Philippines—creating a convection current across the island.
Heavy rain across the western slopes of the central hills has led to dense fog along the Hatton–Nuwara Eliya main road, severely hindering vehicle movement.
Police have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when travelling on both the Hatton–Nuwara Eliya and the Nuwara Eliya–Gampola main roads.
The Department of Irrigation confirmed that despite the heavy rain, no main reservoir sluice gates have been opened at this time.
