The Postmaster General, Ruwan Sathkumara, has stated that he is facing severe difficulties due to the fraudulent and inefficient service provided by postal officers.
Speaking at an event in Haputale, he further indicated that an audit has been conducted at the Kelaniya Post Office, and upon the conclusion of the investigation, a majority of the postal service officers and postmen will be suspended from work.
However, postal trade unions are voicing strong opposition to the Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara's comments.
A walk and a distribution of leaflets were held in Haputale to raise public awareness about the postal service, coinciding with World Post Day on October 9.
This was followed by a programme for Badulla District postal officers, chaired by the Postmaster General, Ruwan Sathkumara.
Speaking further at the event, the Postmaster General mentioned that about 400 audits have been conducted for last year and this year, and that a majority of those audits relate to overtime fraud.
