Abolishment of CEB further delayed

The abolition of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) faces further delays, according to recent reports. Although a relevant gazette notification was scheduled for release on the first of next month, Energy Ministry Secretary Professor Udayanga Hemapala stated that the delay stems from the inability to finalize the National Electricity Tariff Policy and obtain Cabinet approval for the broader electricity policy.

Public consultations regarding the policy are currently underway, after which the framework will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. Once the CEB is officially dissolved, its assets and personnel are slated for transfer to four separate companies.

While nearly 2,100 employees requested voluntary retirement with compensation, these transitions will also remain on hold due to the postponement of the board's dissolution.
