The Sri Lankan government has officially brought back the National Fuel Pass QR system to manage dwindling energy reserves amidst escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The Ministry of Power and Energy announced that the rationing scheme took effect at 06:00 today, Sunday, 15 March 2026. Authorities stated that the move is a precautionary measure to ensure the country's economic activities can continue as international supply routes face ongoing disruption. The Ministry also cited an "abnormal" surge in domestic demand, identifying illegal stockpiling and black-market syndicates as primary drivers for the sudden strain on national stocks.
From this morning, no fuel will be issued at any filling station across the island without a valid QR code.
Accessing your fuel pass
Motorists can manage their registration through the official portal at https://fuelpass.gov.lk/ based on their current status:
Existing users: If your vehicle ownership and mobile number have not changed since the previous registration, you may download your existing code directly.
New or updated details: If you have recently purchased a vehicle, changed your mobile number, or are registering a new vehicle with the Department of Motor Traffic, you must complete a fresh registration on the site.
Weekly fuel allowances by vehicle type
To ensure equitable distribution, the following weekly quotas have been established:
"We must manage our remaining reserves with extreme caution to maintain the nation's economic functions," said Shaan Mohammed, Media Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy.
The government confirmed that private passenger buses will continue to be supplied through the Sri Lanka Transport Board depots. Furthermore, a separate mechanism is being implemented to ensure that essential services and industrial production units remain operational during this period of restricted supply.
