Man held with cannabis strapped to body

A smuggler travelling from Hambegamuwa to Colombo with a stock of dried cannabis strapped across his body was arrested in Thanamalwila.

Police confirmed the arrest took place yesterday (28) evening, based on a tip-off while the suspect was travelling in a passenger bus.

The suspect is a 52-year-old resident of Hambegamuwa.

Police intercepted and searched the bus in the Mahawewa area of Thanamalwila, discovering 2 and a half kilograms of dried cannabis hidden cleverly by being tied to the man's body.

Investigations revealed the suspect planned to travel from Hambegamuwa to Middeniya and then proceed to Colombo.

Police further noted the individual had conducted this illegal trade for a long period.

The suspect is due for production before the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court while Thanamalwila Police conduct further inquiries.
