Alcohol consumption in Sri Lanka continues to rise

The Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) attributes this trend to the lack of proper price revisions for alcoholic beverages since 2024.

Data from 2025 indicates that beer production rose by 5% while spirit production surged by 17%.

In contrast, a 20% tax increase in 2023 led to a sales decline of 8.3 million liters compared to 2022.

ADIC further noted that additional tax hikes at the beginning of 2024 resulted in a sales drop of 430,000 liters relative to the previous year.
