Arrest warrant issued for former SriLankan Airlines CEO over bail controversy

The Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued a warrant today (7) to arrest and produce the former Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines, Kapila Chandrasena, before the court immediately.

The order followed confirmation that the suspect, previously released on bail regarding an alleged two-million-US-dollar bribery case involving the purchase of Airbus aircraft, violated his court-imposed bail conditions.

Magistrate Bodaragama delivered the ruling after considering a motion filed by the Bribery Commission this morning requesting the cancellation of bail and the issuance of a warrant.

Investigations into two sureties provided during the granting of bail revealed they were fraudulent individuals acting for payment.

Police informed the court that Mohamed Rizwan and Mohamed Irshan, who reportedly appeared for a payment of Rs. 15,000, possessed no personal acquaintance with the suspect nor any permanent employment or source of income.

The two fraudulent sureties remain in remand custody until 13 May.
