A three-year-old boy lost his life when his father fell through a broken wooden plank in an attic and landed directly on him.
The father had gone up to retrieve a water hose.
Gampola Police stated that the father sustained severe injuries during the unexpected incident and remains hospitalised.
The victim was identified as Mohamed Ayad, a three-year-old resident of Pihilladeniya in the Adiakadavatha area of Naranwita, Gampola.
Police investigations revealed that the father climbed a ladder to the attic of his ancestral home this morning (17) to fetch a hose to wash his motorcycle.
When he stepped onto a wooden board in the loft, the timber snapped, causing him to plunge onto the little boy standing directly below.
Initial inquiries indicated that the child had been playing in the yard and followed his father inside just as the man entered the building.
The child, pinned face down by the weight of his heavily built father, suffered severe bleeding from his nose and mouth.
Family members rushed both victims to the Gampola Teaching Hospital in a three-wheeled vehicle.
However, medical staff confirmed the toddler was already deceased upon arrival.
