Official printing of vehicle license plates, halted for over a year, officially resumed this morning (08) under the leadership of Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena.
The operations restarted at the printing section established within the Motor Vehicle Inspection and Training Center of the Department of Motor Traffic in Werahera.
Printing operations were temporarily suspended following the conclusion of the official contract period in April last year for the private company that handled domestic vehicle plate printing for 22 years.
Efforts are now underway to expedite the printing of license plates for all vehicle categories, including motorcycles, three-wheelers, cars, vans, and buses, starting today.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, attended the event and shared the following details regarding the initiative:
"Steps were taken to select relevant institutions through a formal procurement process based on technical committee evaluations, ensuring the standardized printing of vehicle license plates. Measures are in place to print and distribute daily the backlog of halted license plates alongside plates for all newly registered vehicles. Under this new program, vehicle owners will receive an SMS notification within two hours of their license plate printing being completed."
