Kuwait introduces new migrant worker recruitment rules

The State of Kuwait has issued new rules regulating the recruitment of domestic workers, allowing restricted hiring to 10 approved countries — including Sri Lanka — while banning recruitment from 27 other nations.

The directive, issued by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior, is intended to enhance regulatory oversight and improve labour market efficiency.

Under the new system, Sri Lankan domestic workers remain eligible for recruitment. The process is to be administered through Kuwait’s governorates, under new regulations.

The move follows recommendations and assessments from several government bodies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health, and the Public Authority for Manpower.

Local media reports note that while some of the affected countries have diplomatic missions in Kuwait, others do not maintain embassies in the country.

The ministry has confirmed that residency affairs departments and service centres have been informed and instructed to enforce the new regulations.
