Yoshitha granted bail with travel restriction

Yoshitha Rajapaksa, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over an investigation related to his entry into the Sri Lanka Navy and the British Royal Naval Academy, was released on three surety bails of Rs. 5 million each by Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva today (17).

The court also imposed a foreign travel ban on the suspect and ordered that the directive be communicated to the Controller of Immigration and Emigration through the court registrar.

The order was issued after the Bribery Commission arrested the suspect and produced him before court today (17).

The Commission stated that in 2006, during recruitment into the Executive Branch of the Sri Lanka Navy, the suspect had allegedly been enlisted as a cadet officer without meeting the required qualifications, and later facilitated participation in a training programme at the British Royal Naval College at state expense outside established procedures.

The Bribery Commission further told court that the suspect, along with then Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda, had allegedly conspired to cause a loss of Rs. 62,814,216 to the government within two weeks, enabling him to attend the training programme despite not being eligible.
