The General Manager of the Lanka Salt Company was arrested this morning (19) over allegations of causing a loss of nearly Rs. 14.3 million to the government by acting outside proper procurement procedures.
The arrest was made by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). The arrested official has been identified as R.M.G. Gunaratne, the serving General Manager of the Lanka Salt Company.
He was taken into custody at around 9.55 a.m. today by bribery commission officials.
Investigations revealed that during the procurement of salt packaging supplies for the Hambantota Salt Company, goods were obtained without following proper procurement procedures through a falsified re-order process, resulting in a financial loss of approximately Rs. 14,300,000 to the state.
The arrested General Manager is expected to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court for further proceedings.
