The executive board of the Bahujana Balaya organisation unanimously decided to remove Charith Abeyasinghe from his membership and his position as national organiser, effective immediately. This decision follows serious bribery and corruption allegations levelled against him.
General Secretary of Bahujana Balaya, Iranga Mendis, issued a formal statement regarding the removal. The organisation cited the commencement of legal investigations, his arrest, and subsequent court appearances as the primary drivers for this administrative action. These steps ensure the protection of the organisation’s reputation, credibility, and public trust, while upholding its commitment to good governance, transparency, and anti-corruption policies.
The statement clarifies that this decision does not constitute a prejudgment of guilt. It is described purely as an administrative measure taken to preserve the integrity of the organisation until the court reaches a final verdict.
Bahujana Balaya maintains that politics serves as a responsibility to uphold public trust rather than a method to protect individual reputations. The organisation asserts that it will not hesitate to take disciplinary action for activities contrary to its principles, regardless of an individual's popularity or position. The statement further emphasises that ensuring the democratic principle of equality before the law remains a responsibility shared by the government and all political organisations.
