The Ombudsman will be appointed following the receipt of the report on the distribution of powers from the prosecutor's office, according to Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara.
This was mentioned by Minister Nanayakkara, in response to the query from Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Ajith P. Perera today, during parliamentary proceedings, on the delay in appointing a parliamentary Ombudsman as outlined in the NPP policy statement.
Minister Nanayakkara explained that the establishment of the prosecutor's office requires a clear definition of the Attorney General's role and the specific powers delegated to the prosecutors.
He noted that the Ombudsman serves to address grievances arising from the exercise of the Attorney General's powers.
Until the division of powers between the prosecutor's office and the Attorney General is established, determining the ombudsman's placement remains difficult.
The minister emphasised that work is underway and the government awaits the final report to proceed with the appointment.
