Sri Lanka ranks as top global wellness destination for 2026

Sri Lanka now holds the title of the world’s most trending wellness destination for 2026, based on the recent State of Retreats report from BookRetreats.com.

The country secured the top spot following a 100% year-on-year surge in search interest, outperforming nations such as Australia, Morocco, England, and Spain.

The report identifies Sri Lanka’s deep-rooted Ayurvedic traditions, natural beauty, and cost-effectiveness as primary drivers for this popularity.

Wellness retreats in regions like Kandy offer starting prices around US$373, providing a budget-friendly alternative to European options.

Recent government initiatives, such as the removal of tourist visa fees for visitors from 40 countries, further enhance the appeal of island wellness holidays.

Beyond wellness, travellers are drawn to the nation's diverse wildlife—including blue whale sightings and large gatherings of wild elephants—as well as its accessible year-round beach resorts.

These rankings reflect year-on-year growth in unique website traffic and incorporate insights from a survey of over 1,000 U.S. travellers conducted earlier this year.
