Indian among deceased in Negombo prison unrest

The Hindu reports that an Indian national died during the recent unrest at the Negombo prison.

Citing official sources in Colombo, the publication identifies the deceased as 73-year-old Unnikrishnan S.

The report notes that while the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka issued no official statement regarding the death, the diplomatic mission sent a note verbale to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs concerning the incident.

The sources further informed The Hindu that authorities transferred other Indian nationals held at the Negombo prison to different facilities.

The newspaper sought additional information from the Sri Lanka Department of Prisons and the Indian High Commission regarding the charges against the deceased and the total number of Indian inmates relocated from Negombo, but received no response at the time of reporting.
