More details emerge on Negombo prison unrest

Numerous details are emerging regarding the unrest that erupted at the Negombo prison and the inmates involved in the incident.

Inmates behaving violently issued death threats against the prison officer who fired shots to prevent prisoners from breaking through the main prison gate during the clash.

Prison sources report that the officer in question reported for duty on the day of the emergency while undergoing treatment for dengue.

The Department of Prisons took necessary measures to ensure the safety of the officer.

Meanwhile, a group of inmates at the prison where he is currently held assaulted 'Katuwellegama Suresh', identified as the main suspect who led the Negombo prison clash.

Investigations reveal that Suresh and 13 of his accomplices planned the clash.

The gang includes an inmate named 'Rocky', who reportedly led the clash alongside Suresh and went into hiding afterwards.

Following the clash, Rocky worked alongside prison officers to distribute food and drinks to other inmates to make it appear as though he was not involved.

Prison sources state that the group of 13 suspects is currently held securely at the Boossa prison.

Furthermore, the repeater-type firearm that went missing from the prison during the clash was recovered within the prison premises.

The Criminal Investigation Department, conducting the investigations, took 22 repeater firearms and 10 T58 firearms belonging to the Negombo prison into custody.

Further investigations are underway.
