Sri Lanka focuses on death penalty for drug crimes

Special attention was focused on executing the death penalty for drug-related crimes during the "Ratama Ekata" National Operations Council, as the toxic drug menace went beyond mere individual concepts and became a severe threat to the entire national economy, tourism industry, and social ethics system.

This was extensively discussed during the meeting of the "Ratama Ekata" National Operations Council held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat today (10) morning, the Presidential Media Division announced.

Legal amendments related to drug control and the bail process are already prepared and in the final stages, and those are scheduled to be urgently gazetted and presented to parliament, it was discussed on that occasion.

Steps were taken to prevent delays in government analyst reports, and 6,414 reports were issued in the month of July alone, while a decision was also made to obtain the assistance of the Navy for chemical analysis activities, the report states.

The President instructed on this occasion to present a specific data classification based on the quantity of drugs seized (such as less than 5 grammes, less than 10 grammes, etc.) to expedite legal proceedings for suspects, and to establish direct coordination between the Government Analyst, Police, and Prisons.
