ITAK demands referendum on 22nd Constitutional Amendment

The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi strongly emphasizes that the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution should be subjected to a referendum for public approval, as it directly impacts the sovereignty of the people.

The party announces that its political bureau, which met yesterday (22) at its main office in Jaffna, reached this decision.

The party's position is that since these new legal measures introduced by the current Compass government are closely tied to the fundamental rights and sovereignty of the people, passing it in Parliament alone is insufficient.

Accordingly, a statement issued under the signatures of Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi Chairman C.V.K. Sivagnanam and General Secretary President's Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran states that it must be submitted to a referendum to obtain the direct approval of the people, who hold the true ownership.
