Man dies after falling from eucalyptus tree in Norwood

A person who sustained severe injuries after falling from a eucalyptus tree while trying to climb it and cut its branches on an estate belonging to the Norwood Police division died before being admitted to the Bagawantalawa Regional Hospital, Norwood Police said.


Sarath Weerasekara, a 52-year-old resident of the Hewaheta area in Hanguranketha, died after falling off the tree in this manner.


The person who sustained severe injuries from this mishap was hospitalised yesterday (23) evening, District Medical Officer of the Bagawantalawa Regional Hospital A. S. K. Jayasuriya said.


It is reported that the deceased worked under the contractor who obtained the contract to cut eucalyptus trees in the lower section of the Carfaxwall Helboda estate belonging to the Norwood Police division.


There, he fell down while climbing about 35 feet up a eucalyptus tree and cutting its branches with a chainsaw.


Norwood Police are conducting further investigations regarding the incident.
