The upcoming 2026 Budget will provide significant financial support to strengthen the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and enhance public bus services. The proposed measures, announced by Deputy Transport and Highways Minister Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, are aimed at resolving the cost-income imbalance faced by the SLTB.
Key Financial Proposals
The government has proposed an allocation of Rs. 6,000 million to cover operational costs on routes with insufficient passenger numbers, a move intended to ensure reliable services across the country. An additional Rs. 50 million has been proposed to establish a dedicated factory for refilled tyre manufacturing, which is expected to reduce maintenance costs.
Furthermore, Rs. 3.5 billion in unspent capital expenditure funds from this year are planned to be reallocated to improve SLTB infrastructure. A key focus of this investment will be the upgrading of accommodation facilities for drivers and conductors, which the government considers essential for improving service quality.
Government’s Commitment
The proposals underscore the government's continued commitment to strengthening the public transport sector. By investing in infrastructure, local manufacturing, and passenger services, authorities aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of the SLTB and deliver better service to commuters nationwide.
