Sri Lanka to launch digital motor insurance card on Jan. 7

Sri Lanka will officially launch its Digital Motor Insurance Card on January 7, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation drive. The initiative is being introduced by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka.

The official launch ceremony will be held under the patronage of Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala at the Ministry of Public Security auditorium at Suhurupaya, Battaramulla. Senior officials of the Police Department, insurance industry leaders, media representatives and other key stakeholders are expected to attend.

The initiative introduces Sri Lanka’s first digital motor insurance card, which is expected to become effective nationwide shortly. It aligns closely with the Government’s national digitalisation agenda as well as the Go Green policy framework.

The digital motor insurance card eliminates the need for physical plastic insurance cards, offering a more secure, efficient and environmentally responsible solution for policyholders, insurers and law enforcement authorities.

Key benefits of the digital motor insurance card include environmental sustainability through the elimination of printing and annual distribution of millions of plastic cards, operational efficiency through reduced printing and administrative costs for insurers, and greater convenience for policyholders who can access valid motor insurance details at any time through their mobile devices.

The system will also enable police officers to instantly verify motor insurance coverage through a centralised digital platform. This is expected to significantly reduce forged insurance documents, enhance road safety and strengthen public security.

Regulators said the digital motor insurance card represents more than a technological upgrade, describing it as a trust building initiative that promotes transparency, efficiency and accountability across the insurance and enforcement ecosystem.

The launch reflects strong collaboration between the regulator and the insurance industry and signals a new phase for Sri Lanka’s motor insurance sector, one that embraces digital innovation while prioritising public interest, sustainability and national security.

In support of the rollout, the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka, together with its 13 general insurance member companies, will provide more than 500 tablets to the Police Department for the implementation of the new Accident Management System.

The tablets will enable police officers to record accident data digitally and in real time, reducing reliance on manual documentation and improving the speed and accuracy of accident reporting. The initiative is expected to strengthen the digital interface between the insurance sector and law enforcement, contributing to a more responsive and transparent environment for motorists nationwide.
