Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) celebrated a major milestone with the launch of the tenth and final vessel in its 5,000 DWT Eco Bulk Carrier series, named ‘Misje Kandy’, built for Misje EcoBulk AS of Norway.
The vessel, named after Kandy—the ancient capital of Sri Lanka—carries both commercial and national significance. The ceremonial launching involved the traditional Sri Lankan ritual of breaking a pot of milk over the ship’s bow to invite good fortune, followed by filling the dock with seawater to float the vessel for the first time.
The ceremony was attended by Roald Misje, Owner of Misje EcoBulk; Alina Printseva, CFO; and senior representatives from Misje EcoBulk including Site Manager Thusitha Herath, Venura Wanasinghe, and Prince Jawahar. DNV Country Manager Saman A. Kumarasinghe was also present.
In his address, CDPLC MD/CEO Thimira Godakumbura expressed gratitude to the owners for naming the vessel ‘Misje Kandy’, highlighting the symbolic and meaningful gesture. Roald Misje noted the successful collaboration, celebrating the construction of ten vessels over the past five years.
As a leader in Sri Lanka’s shipbuilding industry, CDPLC continues to demonstrate global excellence, securing and executing shipbuilding projects worldwide. The shipyard contributes significantly to the country’s export earnings, generating essential foreign currency, and plays a pivotal role in advancing Sri Lanka’s maritime development strategy.
